Craft beads aren't just for stringing on a piece of thread anymore! There are several different ways you can use them to inspire, teach, and encourage learning in young children. And they will have fun too!

Alternate ways to use craft beads with kids:

**The following activities are meant for use with children over the age of 3. Please always supervise their participation with small objects such as craft beads.

Sort Them By Color. During the preschool years (3-5 approximately) children are learning to sort and categorize all kinds of objects.  From the clothes in their drawers to the food on their plates, sorting is everywhere,  and sorting objects, like beads, can help with early learning concepts such as classification and color recognition.

Make A Patterning Activity. Preschoolers are also keen on early math skills like patterning. You can create your own patterning activity by setting out beads in ABAB or ABBABB patterns, snap a photo, print it out and have them match up the pattern!
 
Match/ Mark out Shapes and Pictures. Using the same concept as the patterning activity, arrange the beads into shapes, snap a photo, print it out, and have them mimic what they see. This is great for shape recognition.

Count and Graph Them. Brings a new meaning to being a "bean counter". Usually, packets of craft beads never have the exact same number of each color bead inside. Challenge your child to discover just how many of each color are in the bag!
So, there you have it. Turn one bag of beads into several different activities. I purchased my bag of beads at the dollor store. It was well worth the buy.

This thanksgiving kids craft is one of my favorites,  not just because it's not a turkey ( I am so turkeyed out by mid November)  but because it can be used for such a wide range of ages.  Have fun !
  1. Gather your materials. You will need 2 pieces of paper, a crayon, paint, a piece of bubble wrap, a paint brush, glue and scissors.
  2. Draw 2 ears of corn on a yellow or white piece of construction paper.
  3. Mix some paint on a plate, and dip the bubble wrap in it, I blotted it in paper towel first. This was as much as my son would do with the wrap, right after I took this picture I got told ” No , no brush, pease” .

  4. If your child likes bubble wrap have them press the bubble wrap on their corn. My son used a paint brush instead. I did a bubble wrap one though, so you can see the results below ! Let the corn dry.
  5. When your child is painting with bubble wrap or a brush, draw some husks on the 2nd piece of paper.
  6. Have your child paint it brown with a paint brush, as you can see my son was all over this step! Let everything dry.

  7. Cut out the corn – you can see that as cool as the bubble print corn is the one my son made is just as wonderful, so don’t stress if your child goes “off book” it’s all good! It looks almost like he used the wrap in places but it was all dotting with the brush.

  8. Cut out the husks, if your child can use scissors let them do the cutting, and glue to the top of the corn.

The people over at Wondetime(a Disney publication) have given step-by-step directions on how to create your very own scratch & sniff art with a little water and Kool-Aid.  My kids aren't quite able to draw out the fruit bowl as suggested, so I sketched out a few of our favorite fruits and let them paint those.

They had fun.  The cleanup was easy.  And my dining room now smells very sweet!

It’s October so let’s get ready for Halloween! For families that choose not to participate in Halloween this craft can still be useful, simply leave out the red fangs and change up the color scheme.

  1. Gather your materials. You will need black, red and orange construction paper, glue, some crayons, scissors and googly eyes.
  2. Start by having your child draw a bunch of fun nighttime things on the orange paper, stars, a moon, even an owl would be great! You can help if your little one is still young or skip it like we did. I added the stars, etc… after we were done just for y’all.
  3. Trace your child’s hands on black paper.
  4. Have your child color the hands with a white crayon.kids crafts How to Make a Handprint Bat Craft for Kids
  5. While they are coloring, draw a bat head. Don’t worry about making mistakes we’ll use the opposite side and cut out small red fangs.
  6. Cut the head and hands out.
  7. Put two globs of glue on your orange paper for the hands.
  8. Pop the hands on, don’t worry about what sides are up, one of ours is upside down , but make sure they meet in the middle .

  10. Glue on the fangs. I usually add the glue then help direct him where to put them, saying things like " Can you point the triangle down,” but if I wasn’t blogging it I wouldn’t be so concerned with how it “looks.”  A good tip is to talk about what you are adding saying "Fangs are big teeth, where should the bat’s teeth go?”
  11. Add the eyes! If your child is still eating things like mine did forever, you can draw eyes on with a white crayon instead.

All done! A fun Halloween, or Nocturnal Animal, craft you can enjoy making with your little one.
